Eclipsed, Patricia Burke Brogan’s play about a Magdalene laundry was inspired by her experiences as a novitiate in a religious order. Her dismay at the conditions she found there was instrumental in her leaving the religious life. The play was rejected by the main theatre companies who deemed it too controversial. Eventually, Punchbag, a Galway company, staged the work in 1992. Eclipsed won a fringe first at the Edinburgh theatre Festival in 1992 and the Moss Hart award in 1994. It is now an option on the English Leaving Certificate syllabus.
