The Glens Centre

At the start of the 1990s, a local community group, aiming to develop the Arts in the North West, bought the former Methodist Church in Manorhamilton. The Church was in poor condition at the time and it was restored with financial assistance from the I.F.I. (International Fund for Ireland). The new Arts centre was named The Glens Centre because it is located in the heart of the North Leitrim glens. The then President of Ireland, Mary Robinson, performed the official opening in July 1995. A few years later the building was extended and now houses offices, rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms and a theatre all under the one roof. The centre hosts a broad range of activities such as theatre, workshops in music, writing and drama as well as poetry readings. Dermot Healy is the current writer-in-residence and he has assisted greatly in the development of creative writing in the area.

The Glens committee have a policy of regularly offering a range of Irish language events. Writers who have read their work at the centre over the years include Louis de Paor, Cathal Ó Searcaigh and Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill. Additionally popular groups Fibín and Kíla perform in the Glens regularly. And, of course, Splódar stage drama in Irish also. The centre has a recording system and groups who have recorded recently include Dervish…..
